Incorporated in August 1905 and known as the Friendly City, Long Beach has a campus at its center of gravity. The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus occupies fifty-two acres on the beachfront, and a campus town generates a particular kind of cleaning calendar: leases that turn over on a semester schedule, move-outs that all land in the same few weeks, and households that come and go with the academic year rather than the tourist one.
The town has a strange and excellent piece of history behind it. Long Beach was once the Radish Capital of the World -- in 1921 over three hundred trainloads of Long Beach Long Red radishes shipped north out of here. The harbor is still working, and the beachfront along US-90 is the front door of the town.
Katrina rewrote the shoreline. Almost every building within 1,600 feet of the water was destroyed, and business activity has not returned to pre-storm levels, in part because federal building codes tightened afterward. What that means for cleaning is concrete rather than sentimental: the housing near the water is newer, raised and built tighter than what it replaced, while the stock further inland is older and has the trim, the corners and the original surfaces to prove it.
