Colorado City is the anchor of the Greenhorn Valley, in the foothills of the Wet Mountains southwest of Pueblo, and it is the one part of this county where second homes are a real share of the housing rather than a rounding error. About 2,240 people live in Colorado City itself, with Beulah Valley at 518 and the town of Rye at 206; taken together the three valley ZIPs hold about 4,375 residents in 3,108 housing units -- and 909 of those units, 29 percent, are for seasonal, recreational or occasional use. Against 1.8 percent county-wide and 0.6 percent inside the city of Pueblo, that is a different housing market inside the same county. Around Rye and the upper valley the share reaches nearly 43 percent.

One thing said plainly, because it is the honest part of working out here: the valley is a drive. Colorado City is about half an hour from downtown Pueblo, Beulah and Rye further again up the canyons. That does not change whether we come -- it changes how we book it.
