Start with the city, because it is the whole reason this market exists. About 111,900 people live here, which makes Pueblo the county seat and Colorado's ninth most populous city. It sits at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek, roughly 112 miles south of Denver, on the western edge of the Great Plains where they run into the Front Range. The modern city is a consolidation of four separate towns -- Pueblo, incorporated in 1870, South Pueblo in 1873, Central Pueblo in 1882, and Bessemer in 1886, which was annexed in 1894 -- and the site before all of them was El Pueblo, a trading plaza built around 1842 and abandoned after the Fort Pueblo Massacre at Christmas 1854. That history is not decoration. It is why locals still name sides of town after towns, and it is why the housing stock has as much range as it does.

The steel mill is the other half of the explanation. The Colorado Fuel and Iron works on the south side was, for nearly a century, the largest employer in the state of Colorado, and it still rolls rail, rod, bar and tube today as Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel. Before the mill built the blast furnaces, Pueblo was the saddle-making capital of the world -- until the Great Flood of 1921 destroyed roughly a third of downtown's businesses and the city rebuilt around the diverted river. ZIP 81001 around Belmont, the East Side and the university is 52.6 percent with a median age of 34. Blende is 57.9 percent, Salt Creek 75.6 percent, Avondale 78.1 percent. Both of the city's higher-education institutions, Colorado State University Pueblo and Pueblo Community College, are federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School runs the only state-recognized early college program in the city. None of that is new here either: more than 40 languages were spoken in the steel mill and more than two dozen foreign-language newspapers were published in this city, which is how it earned the name the Melting Pot of the West.
