St. George is a city that did not exist when most of the cleaning companies serving this parish built their websites. Voters approved incorporation on 12 October 2019, opponents sued three weeks later, and the case ran until the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in favor of the new city on 26 April 2024. Governor Jeff Landry appointed Dustin Yates interim mayor and Todd Morrison police chief the following month, elections for the permanent council and chief followed in 2025, and City Hall now sits on Proverbs Avenue. The city puts its own population at about 86,000, which makes it the second-largest city in East Baton Rouge Parish and the fifth-largest in Louisiana.

Geographically it is the southeast quadrant of the parish -- roughly sixty square miles bounded by the Mississippi River on the west, Bayou Manchac on the south and the Amite River on the east. Six places that used to be listed separately are now neighborhoods of it: Shenandoah, Oak Hills Place, Old Jefferson, Inniswold, Village St. George and Westminster. If you have lived here a while you probably still say one of those names rather than "St. George", and plenty of maps still agree with you.

Here is the practical wrinkle, and it is the reason we wrote this page rather than folding the area into the city page. St. George has no postal city name of its own. Mail to every address in Louisiana's fifth-largest city is still addressed Baton Rouge, using 70809, 70810, 70816, 70817 and 70820. So when you tell a company you live in St. George, half their systems have never heard of it, and when you tell them you live in Baton Rouge, you get routed to the wrong side of a very large parish. Give us the subdivision and the ZIP and we will get it right the first time.

The housing here is mostly what you would expect of a suburban half-parish that filled in between the 1970s and the 2000s: brick ranch houses and two-story subdivisions on established lots, mature trees, and the kind of square footage that comes with three or four bathrooms rather than two. Inniswold and Westminster sit closest to the middle of town, around thirteen minutes from downtown. Old Jefferson is the farthest out, closer to twenty-two. A house that has been standing since 1985 under this much rain has grout, window tracks, closet corners and vent registers that a newer build simply does not, and that is where a visit here actually goes.
