Springdale is 514 residents living on 4.62 square miles inside Zion Canyon, at 3,855 feet, immediately against the national park boundary. It is one of only three places in Washington County that got smaller between the 2010 and 2020 censuses, down from 529, while hosting hundreds of thousands of Zion visitors a year. Settled in 1862 by people evacuating the flooding of nearby Northrop, it is now a town whose permanent population would not fill a school gymnasium and whose visitor load runs to six figures.

That imbalance is the whole story of cleaning here. Springdale has a moratorium on new short-term-rental business licences: no new permits, no waitlist, existing licences grandfathered and transferable with the property. The moratorium exists because nightly rentals were consuming the town's limited housing stock and making it nearly impossible for local workers to find somewhere affordable to live. We will be honest about that drive, because it is the reason most cleaning companies skip this town. Springdale is about 42 miles from St. George, roughly 45 minutes, on State Route 9 through Hurricane, La Verkin, Virgin and Rockville. In season that road carries park traffic on top of everybody else. The town itself is built around walking into the park. The free Springdale town shuttle runs the length of the main road to the pedestrian park entrance, which means guests frequently park once and never move the car again -- and it means a property's front walk, entry and windows are the first and last thing they see all week.
