Skidaway Island sits southeast of Savannah across the Diamond Causeway, and most of it is The Landings -- one of the largest gated communities in the country, roughly 4,566 acres with something on the order of 4,400 homes at completion, six golf courses and two deep-water marinas. About 9,300 people live on the island, and about half of them are 65 or older.

That combination produces a very particular kind of cleaning work, and it is the kind we are built for. Households here are settled, they are not moving every two years, and what they want is the same clean on the same schedule without having to re-explain the house every time. Many are downsized-but-still-large homes: fewer people, same square footage, same number of bathrooms and stairs. A fair number are second homes with snowbird schedules, closed up for part of the year and needing a proper reset when the owners come back.

The island is also a route planner's dream, which we will admit is why it made the launch list.
