The peninsula is a rental market with a ferry in front of it, and any cleaning company that does not plan around that will miss your check-in. The free TxDOT Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry is the only route from the island -- roughly every thirty minutes in daylight, hourly after dark, more often in season -- and the landward alternative around through High Island is over an hour. Routing software puts Crystal Beach at about 42 minutes from downtown Galveston and High Island at about 65, both assuming no queue. In summer and on holiday weekends that assumption does not hold. What we are turning over is a rental market more than a neighborhood. The year-round median age is 62.5, so the permanent population is small and largely retired while the housing stock is mostly rentals. The houses themselves are the product of one day. Hurricane Ike destroyed or severely damaged about 3,600 structures on 13 September 2008 -- 62 percent of everything on the peninsula -- and nearly every house standing now was built after it, on pilings. So a turn here means stairs on every load, decks and rails carrying salt film, ground-level entries and outdoor showers full of sand, and glass that looks dirty a week after it was cleaned unless somebody deals with the salt properly. Every turn ends with photos of each room and a note on anything broken, missing or running low. That matters more here than almost anywhere, because checking on a Bolivar property yourself means committing to a ferry queue in both directions.
