With 38,639 residents at the 2020 Census, Security-Widefield is the largest community in this market after Colorado Springs proper -- bigger than Fountain, bigger than Monument and Manitou Springs combined. It sits immediately southeast of the city, about eight miles from downtown, and at 97.7 percent urban it is effectively continuous with Colorado Springs rather than a drive away.
It is really two communities that grew into one. Security and Widefield are split by Fontaine Boulevard, and each half has its own water and sanitation district -- Security Water and Sanitation on one side, Widefield Water and Sanitation on the other. Residents use both names and know exactly which side of the boulevard they live on, so we do too. Widefield School District 3 covers the whole area, and S.A. Wilson Elementary, built between 1959 and 1961, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
This is the primary off-post housing corridor for Fort Carson, which shapes the work more than anything else here. Across 13,412 housing units, households turn over on the military's calendar rather than the market's: PCS orders come through, a family has a hard date, and a move-out clean has to pass an inspection rather than look tidy.
