Fort Campbell straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line about twelve miles north of Clarksville. Nearly two-thirds of its roughly 105,000 acres sit in Tennessee, while the post office is in Kentucky and the mailing identity follows the post office -- which is why an installation that is mostly in one state carries a ZIP code in the other. It has been here since 1942, it is the home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), and it also hosts the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), along with Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Campbell Army Airfield and Fort Campbell High School.

The numbers are what make this the center of gravity for cleaning work in the whole market. More than 30,000 active-duty Soldiers are assigned here, with roughly 51,000 family members, 6,400 civilian employees and 2,100 contractors, and the installation supports well over 240,000 people in total. On post there are around 4,557 family housing units and 9,838 barracks spaces -- which is nowhere near enough for that population, and it is not meant to be. About two-thirds of assigned Soldiers and their families live off post, in Montgomery or Stewart County in Tennessee or Christian or Trigg County in Kentucky. ZIP 42223 alone holds about 19,000 residents at roughly 1,678 people per square mile, the densest ZIP in Christian County.
