Kiwi Cleaning Services started in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas with one idea: a cleaning company should tell you exactly what it is going to do, do that, and stand behind it. Everything we built came out of that -- the written 42-point checklist, the Kiwi Clean Guarantee, and quoting the home in front of us instead of reading a number off a price list.

Clarksville is a new market for us, and we say so plainly rather than arriving with a stack of claims we have not earned here yet. What we bring is the part of the business that does not depend on tenure: a checklist every visit follows, eco-friendly products that are safe around kids and pets, all our own supplies and equipment, and a free re-clean within 24 hours if a job is not right.

We did the homework before we opened here, because northern Middle Tennessee asks different questions of a cleaning company than the border does. Summers are humid with highs in the mid-90s and about 53 inches of rain across the year, which makes bathrooms, grout, baseboards and anything with a seal the places a clean either holds or fails. Then there is an actual winter -- roughly seven inches of snow across a season that averages 37 degrees in January -- which means salt, mud and grit come in through the front door for months. Our checklist spends its hours in different places here than the Texas version does.

The other thing we studied is the calendar. Fort Campbell sits on the state line just north of the city, more than 30,000 Soldiers are assigned to it, and about two-thirds of them and their families live off post in civilian housing. Add a city that is 43 percent renter-occupied, a Kentucky county across the line that is the most renter-heavy in that state, and a university semester turnover, and move-in and move-out cleaning stops being an add-on service and becomes the second thing on our list. Summer is the peak of it, and it books out early.

We want to be careful about one thing. There are cleaning companies in this market with genuine military ties, and that is their story to tell rather than ours to borrow. We are a cleaning company that has read the calendar this town runs on and built its schedule around it. That is the whole claim, and we would rather make a small true one than a large borrowed one.
