House Cleaning & Maid Service

Some people call it house cleaning and plenty of our customers call it maid service. It is the same job either way: a professional who comes to your home on a set schedule, works through a written checklist, and leaves the place ready to live in. Both phrases get typed into a search box here in roughly equal measure, so if you arrived on this page looking for one and found the other, you are in the right place.

What separates a real maid service from a one-off clean is the relationship. Your cleaner learns which cabinet the glass cleaner lives in, which rug the dog sleeps on, which storm door sticks in January, and which window you actually look through. After a few visits nobody is following a generic script -- they are cleaning your house the way you would if you had the time.

Most households here land on biweekly. It keeps a house genuinely clean without paying for visits you do not need. Weekly makes sense when there are kids, dogs, or simply more traffic through the door than a two-week gap can absorb -- and in a lake house in July, or any house here between December and March, the entry and the floors alone can justify it. Monthly works for smaller homes and tidy households that mainly want the heavy-effort work handled: bathrooms, kitchen, floors, blinds, window tracks.

You are not locked into whichever plan you start with. Households in this market genuinely do move between frequencies as the year turns -- more often when the house is full of visitors in July and August, less often once color season is over. Tell us and we change the schedule.

Almost every address in this market is near water -- Grand Traverse Bay and its two arms, Lake Michigan, Long Lake, Elk Lake, Torch Lake, Green Lake, Duck Lake, Glen Lake, Lake Leelanau, Boardman Lake. That gives the summer half of the year a very particular kind of dirt. Sand comes in on feet, towels and dogs and does not lift out of a rug the way house dust does; it works into the grout of a tiled entry and into slider tracks, and it gets ground into wood floors by the next person through. Wet swimsuits and lake towels land on hardwood. Screened porches collect a whole season of it.

Then the year turns over. About 101 inches of snow falls here in an average year, January nights run near 17 degrees, and the freeze-thaw shoulder puts road salt, snowmelt and mud through the same doorway in the space of a fortnight. It is the same five surfaces both times, which is why they are standing items on our list rather than something we get to if the clock allows.

A large share of the housing in this market belongs to somebody who is not here most of the year. Second homes line the bay, the Old Mission Peninsula, the Leelanau shoreline, Elk Lake, Torch Lake and the Chain of Lakes, Green Lake and Glen Lake, and many of them sit closed up for months at a stretch.

A closed house is not a clean house. Dust keeps arriving through vents and door seals, water sits in traps, and a Michigan winter finds every gap it can.
