Elk Rapids is the northeast anchor of this market and the door to the Chain of Lakes. About 1,500 people live in the village and roughly 2,000 in ZIP 49629, thirteen miles -- about twenty-one kilometers -- northeast of Traverse City at an elevation of 597 feet, on two square miles of ground that sits between two bodies of water.

That position is the whole character of the village. Elk Rapids occupies an isthmus with Elk Lake on the east and the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay on the west, and the Elk River runs between them, straight through town. There is a harbor, and a waterfront downtown along River Street. Water is not the view here, it is the street plan.

The village has been here a while and wears it lightly. It was platted in 1852, renamed in 1858 after elk antlers found at the mouth of the river, served as the county seat from 1863 to 1879, and incorporated as a village in 1900. Behind Elk Rapids is the Chain of Lakes and Torch Lake, which is Michigan's deepest and second-largest inland lake.
