That position is the whole character of the village. Elk Rapids occupies an isthmus with Elk Lake on the east and the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay on the west, and the Elk River runs between them, straight through town. The village has been here a while and wears it lightly. It was platted in 1852, renamed in 1858 after elk antlers found at the mouth of the river, served as the county seat from 1863 to 1879, and incorporated as a village in 1900.
