Port Aransas is the short-term rental capital of the Texas Coastal Bend, and the numbers are lopsided in a way no other town on this coast can match. Fewer than four thousand people live here year round, and somewhere between 2,350 and 2,530 short-term rentals sit around them, renting at some of the highest nightly rates on the Texas coast. In summer the population swells to 60,000 or more. Almost every one of those visitors sleeps in a property that somebody has to turn over before the next group arrives.

Gulf humidity means a bathroom that only ever gets a quick wipe between guests will grow something in the grout. Balconies, decks, and outdoor stairs need attention that an inland turnover checklist never accounts for.

Getting here is either 28 miles and about 47 minutes from Corpus Christi over the JFK Causeway, Park Road 22 and SH-361 down Mustang Island, or up through Aransas Pass to the free 24-hour vehicle ferry, which runs continuously and carries loads up to 13 feet 6 inches and 80,000 pounds.
