Aransas Pass is where the mainland ends and the island route begins. About 8,900 people live here, 20 miles northeast of Corpus Christi on SH-35 and US-181, and every vehicle heading for the 2,400-odd rentals on Mustang Island either passes through town or queues for the ferry at the end of it. The six-mile causeway and the free vehicle ferry run 24 hours a day, carrying loads up to 13 feet 6 inches and 80,000 pounds.

That geography makes Aransas Pass two things at once.
