Delano is the second-largest city in Kern County -- about 51,400 people, thirty miles north of Bakersfield on SR-99, at an elevation of 315 feet -- and it is important enough that the Census Bureau named the whole metro after it. On paper this market is Bakersfield-Delano, CA. It is easy to write Delano off as a farm town and get it wrong. Chavez National Monument -- Nuestra Senora Reina de la Paz, "La Paz" -- was designated at Keene in the Tehachapi Mountains on 8 October 2012, about thirty-two miles from Bakersfield, where Chavez and his wife Helen are buried in the memorial garden. That history belongs to this town. We name it because you cannot write honestly about Delano without it, and we leave it there.
