Start with the shape of the place, because it explains most of how we schedule. Scottsdale is a ribbon: roughly thirty-one miles from the south tip to the north end, never much more than eleven miles wide, about 184 square miles in total, and around 241,000 people spread along it. Old Town and Troon North are the same city and about a forty-five-minute drive apart. They are also two different cleaning jobs. Down south you get 1950s and 1960s ranch stock, condos and townhomes on small lots close to the Civic Center and Fashion Square. Up north you get desert custom homes on acre-plus lots at 2,500 feet, walls of glass pointed at the McDowells, and stone floors everywhere. Anybody quoting both from the same template has not driven the city.

The desert sets the terms, and here the villain is not one thing but four. Hard water is the first and the biggest: the water in this Valley is heavily mineral and it prints scale onto shower glass, faucets, fixtures and tile that ordinary wiping smears rather than lifts. Second is dust, and the monsoon is what makes it violent -- from roughly mid-June through September a haboob arrives as a wall of fine caliche dust and pushes it through door tracks, window sills and every seal in a closed house. Third is the landscaping: decomposed granite instead of lawns means grit tracked in on shoes twelve months a year, which is a completely different problem from the mud a grass market deals with. Fourth is the humidity, or the lack of it -- dust that settles here stays settled, so horizontal surfaces, fan blades, sills and baseboards re-dust faster than in almost any market we serve.

The housing stock answers those conditions and creates its own work. Tile, travertine and stone floors dominate over carpet, and a carpet-market routine is simply the wrong routine on them. Pools are everywhere, so chlorine, wet feet and monsoon debris all arrive through the same patio door and land on the same three metres of floor. Golf-course-adjacent homes take turf dust and clippings through the back door on a seasonal cycle, and the October overseed is the loudest week of it. And north Scottsdale is still building: in 85255, 85262 and 85266 a builder's "final clean" is a sweep, and the construction dust it leaves behind keeps surfacing on cabinet tops, in vents and in every track for months after move-in.

The calendar here is unusually legible, which is a gift when you are booking cleaners. From October through April a large share of Scottsdale homes belong to people who are only here for part of the year, so autumn is full of opening cleans on houses that sat closed through the hottest months and spring is the same job in reverse. Early February is the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, and from late February through March it is Cactus League spring training at Scottsdale Stadium -- between them they turn over the short-term rental stock on dates you can put in a calendar months ahead. Monsoon season is the one rush nobody schedules: the days after a big storm book out first.

The rest of the city is the part everyone already knows. Old Town and the Civic Center at the south end, Fashion Square, the Airpark up north where most of the city's employers actually sit, Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons, Taliesin West out east, WestWorld, and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve holding roughly thirty thousand acres of desert inside the city limits -- which is a lovely thing to live beside and the reason the dust never really stops.
