The rental economy of the Pocono Mountains does not sit in the boroughs. It sits twelve to twenty-five miles out, behind gates, inside private lake communities that have their own roads, their own beaches and their own security offices. The communities around East Stroudsburg carry most of the households: Arlington Heights and Penn Estates just outside the borough line, Bartonsville out toward the interstate, Minisink Hills and Shawnee on Delaware down along the river, Analomink up the Brodhead, and Marshalls Creek where US 209 turns north. Across the Brodhead Creek is Stroudsburg, the county seat and the only traditional downtown in this area: a wide, tree-lined Main Street with more than two dozen restaurants and nine art galleries on it, the Monroe County courthouse, Stroud Mall, and a stated trade population of about 250,000. The borough itself holds about 5,900 people, but its ZIP reaches across 84.7 square miles and roughly 30,100 residents, which makes it the largest and most populous ZIP in the county.
