Sparta is a township of about 19,600 people in Sussex County, the northernmost county in New Jersey, and it sits in the middle of the four places this market covers. Newton, the county seat, is about 6.5 miles west. The Borough of Hopatcong is about 7 miles south-southwest, on the largest lake in the state. Vernon Township is about 12 miles northeast. Those are straight-line miles, not drive times, and all four places sit in the part of the state New Jersey calls the Skylands.

More about Sparta

Neighborhoods, local conditions, and how we work here.

Sparta is a town of houses. About 84 percent of its homes are detached single-family houses, more than a fifth of them were built before 1950, and about 87 percent of Sparta households own their home. So the job here is nearly always a whole house rather than an apartment: more rooms per visit, more floor, and in the older houses, older trim and older floors that want a careful hand. That is the work this market is built around -- recurring house cleaning on a day you set, done the same way every visit.

The best-known place inside the township is Lake Mohawk. The Arthur D. Crane Company created it as a private lake community with the designer Herbert L. Closs: work on the dam began in 1926, the lake had filled by 1928, and it drains to the Wallkill River. The Lake Mohawk census-designated place counted 9,759 people at the 2020 census, split between Sparta and Byram. It is a private community and we treat it as one. We clean the houses there for the people who live in them, and that is the whole of our business with the lake.

Sparta also has a large piece of protected land on its doorstep. The Sparta Mountain Wildlife Management Area covers about 3,461 acres across Sussex and Morris counties along County Route 517 near Sparta, managed jointly by New Jersey Audubon and the state Department of Environmental Protection. Further out, the county holds the highest point in New Jersey -- High Point, 1,803 feet, in Montague Township -- and every August the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show at the fairgrounds in Augusta runs as the New Jersey State Fair, as it has since 1999.

Across Sussex County the pattern holds: about 84 percent of households own their home, and 78 percent of homes are detached houses. What sets the county apart is its second homes. It has 2,783 seasonal or recreational homes, and that changes what people ask a cleaning company for. Opening a house for the season and closing it again are regular requests here rather than odd ones, and they have their own place in our deep-cleaning service.

Vernon Township is where that second-home layer is thickest. It is the most populous municipality in the county, at about 22,400 people, and 1,145 of its homes -- more than four in ten of all the seasonal homes in the county -- are seasonal or recreational. Mountain Creek runs a ski area in winter and a water park in summer, the Great Gorge Village condominiums are slope-side, and two separate rental-data providers count a few hundred active short-term rentals in the township. That is why rental turnover cleaning sits third on our list here, ahead of move-outs. Turnovers bunch on weekends and into two seasons, and a host needs a cleaner who works from the booking calendar.

Hopatcong and Newton are different again. The Borough of Hopatcong sits on Lake Hopatcong, the largest lake in New Jersey and a tourist destination since the 1880s; about 94 percent of its homes are detached houses, and it has the largest Hispanic community of any municipality in the county. Newton is the county seat, a town of about 3.4 square miles built around a colonial town plot whose first courthouse was finished in 1765. It is the county's other housing stock: about four in ten households rent, close to three in ten homes are in buildings of five or more units, and about four in ten were built before 1950. Move-out cleaning and commercial work in this market lean toward Newton for exactly those reasons.

Sussex County is a new market for us, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Cleaning companies have worked these towns for years and some of them are good at it. What travels with us is the part that does not depend on how long we have been here: a written 42-point checklist every visit follows, eco-friendly products that are safe around children and pets, all supplies and equipment brought to the job, a clear quote before we start with no fees added afterward, and the Kiwi Clean Guarantee -- if a clean is not right, we come back and reclean it free within 24 hours. Every page on this site exists in Spanish as well as English, and you can request a quote and handle scheduling in either language.
