Paterson is about 159,700 people packed into a little under nine square miles, which makes it one of the densest cities in a dense state and the county seat of Passaic County. It is also the only city in America built on purpose around a waterfall: Alexander Hamilton picked the Great Falls of the Passaic River as the site of a planned industrial city, and the raceway system that carried the water to the mills ran them until 1914.
