Our crew works these towns already -- this market opened because the cleaners were here first, not because a map said the numbers looked good.

Frequently Asked Questions
More about Paterson
Neighborhoods, local conditions, and how we work here.
Paterson is about 159,700 people packed into a little under nine square miles, which makes it one of the densest cities in a dense state and the county seat of Passaic County. It is also the only city in America built on purpose around a waterfall: Alexander Hamilton picked the Great Falls of the Passaic River as the site of a planned industrial city, and the raceway system that carried the water to the mills ran them until 1914. Silk City is the city's own name for itself and it is still the right one -- the mills are lofts and museums now, but the street grid, the brick, and the neighborhoods around them are the ones the silk trade built. Downtown, Eastside Park, South Paterson, Sandy Hill, Riverside, the Northside and the Totowa Section of the city are where our work actually happens.
The housing stock here is different from anywhere else we clean, and it changes the job completely. Two-unit houses are a third of Paterson's homes and three-and-four-unit houses another fifth -- together the clear majority -- while the detached single-family house that most cleaning companies write their copy for is under a sixth of the stock. What we are usually cleaning is one floor of a house: reached by a shared stair, above or below somebody else, with a narrower kitchen, higher ceilings, and one bathroom rather than four. That is why the first question on a Paterson quote is which floor, long before it is how many bedrooms -- and why a company that only asks about square footage will quote your home wrong.
The age of the stock is the second half of it. Close to half of Paterson's housing was built before 1950, and in Passaic it is nearer two thirds. Old housing means old surfaces: original hardwood with a century of finish on it, painted-over trim and deep window casings, plaster walls, hex tile in the bathroom, radiators that collect dust behind them where a vacuum will not reach, and grout that was laid before anyone reading this was born. None of that is a problem -- it is what people love about these houses -- but it takes a cleaner who has worked it before and a checklist that names it.
The seasons here each leave their own mess. Winter is road salt and grit, walked in from the curb across old hardwood and tile in a city where street parking means almost everybody arrives at the door on foot, plus the fine dust that steam heat and cast-iron radiators drive up the walls and onto the sills from November onward. Spring is tree pollen through the river corridor and off Garret Mountain, on to sills, screens and entryways. Summer is humidity, which finds bathrooms and basements first -- and in an old two-family with one small bathroom per floor it finds them fast. Autumn is leaf litter tracked through shared entries and stairwells. Our 42-point checklist gives each of those its own line items, which is why a Kiwi clean holds up here rather than looking good for an evening.
The calendar runs on leases. Roughly three quarters of Paterson households rent, and in Passaic it is higher still, so move-outs and move-ins are constant work rather than a seasonal spike: a floor emptied between tenants, a landlord's walk-through on a date that will not move, a family taking over the upstairs unit next weekend. Month-end is the busy edge of every month, not just the busy edge of the year.
Every page on this site exists in Spanish as well as English -- the same pages, not a summary -- and you can request a quote, agree a scope, set a schedule and raise a problem in either language and get the same answer. In this city that is the whole point rather than a feature: Spanish is the language spoken at home in most of Paterson and in most of Passaic, and a cleaning company that only half-works in it is only half-working here.
Kiwi as a company is new to North Jersey, and we say that plainly. The cleaners are not new here -- they already work these towns. What travels with the company is the standard: a written 42-point checklist every visit follows, eco-friendly products safe around children and pets, all supplies and equipment brought to the job, and the Kiwi Clean Guarantee -- if a clean is not right, we come back and reclean it free within 24 hours, no fine print.
