Add them together and the catchment on these two ZIPs is roughly seven thousand people, more than half of them retired, plus several hundred rental properties. That is a real service area, not a village.

The history is worth knowing because people here know it. Dunnellon was founded in 1887, named for the railroad man John F. Dunn, and incorporated in 1891. It got the nickname Boomtown after the phosphate strike of 1889 set off Florida's first mining boom, and it outlived the neighboring phosphate towns when that boom died in the early 1910s. US-41 runs north 24 miles from here to Williston and south 18 miles to Inverness.
