Wheeling is an old city that was once a much bigger one. It held 61,659 people in 1930 and holds 27,052 today, with about 81,249 in the built-up area around it and 139,513 in the metro. What is left behind that arithmetic is the housing: Victorian and early-twentieth-century houses built for a city at its peak. Tall ceilings and picture rails, plaster walls, transoms over the doors, stained glass, deep window wells, coal-era chimneys and flues, and stone or brick basements underneath.
