Cleaning Services in Northampton

The houses are what we planned this market around. More than four in ten homes in Northampton were built before 1940, and the median home in the city dates from 1955. A little under half are detached houses, about a quarter sit in two- to four-unit buildings, and more than one in five are in buildings of five units or more. Older houses mean older surfaces: original wood floors, deep window casings, built-in cabinets, long runs of trim and stair rails that gather dust in places a quick visit never reaches. Cross the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Bridge, dedicated in 1939, and the housing changes. Farther east, Belchertown has the newest housing in this market, with almost one home in five built since 2000, and the highest owner-occupied share, at 87.1 percent. It also heats differently: 43.6 percent of Belchertown homes heat with fuel oil and 10.0 percent with wood. A house with a wood stove has ash and fine soot on the hearth and the surfaces near it all season long, and we plan for that at the quote rather than discovering it on the day.

Five colleges sit in three of our towns: Smith College in Northampton, Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, and Amherst College, Hampshire College and UMass Amherst in Amherst. Amherst is the most populous town in the county, at 39,263 people in 2020, and its median age is 21.4; 59.6 percent of its residents are enrolled in college and 55.8 percent of its homes are rented. Northampton is 42.7 percent renter-occupied. That is why move-in and move-out cleaning sits second on our list here, ahead of deep cleaning. Its housing is mixed, roughly half detached and a quarter in two- to four-unit buildings, with almost a third built before 1940. South Hadley is settled family housing -- 67.1 percent detached and 77.0 percent owner-occupied -- and the home of Mount Holyoke College, founded in 1837 by Mary Lyon and the oldest continuing institution of higher education for women. Late summer and early fall are the busiest stretch of the year for cleaning here. If you want a move-out clean or a deep clean in those weeks, ask early rather than the week before.
