Start with the thing every newcomer gets wrong. There are two Barres. Barre City incorporated out of Barre Town in 1895, and the Town now surrounds the City on every side -- roughly 8,500 people inside the line and 7,900 more around it, two governments, one postal name, and one ZIP code that belongs to neither of them alone.
